Finalist in the Blacktown City Art Prize 2019
I am thrilled to announce that my painting 'Artefacts of the Anthropocene' has been selected as a finalist in the Blacktown City Art Prize. The exhibition opens Saturday 30 November 2019 at The Leo Kelly Blacktown Art Centre, 78 Flushcombe Rd, Blacktown, NSW. The exhibition runs until Saturday 25 January 2020.
The painting depicts common single use plastic items that we use with food. I introduced an element of the Baroque through the patterned wallpaper. It occurred to me that our rampant consumption of single use plastic bears some correspondence with the flamboyant excesses of the Baroque. The weathered and deteriorating wooden table stands in stark contrast to the shiny and permanent plastic which will last hundreds of years after everything else has turned to dust. I hope that one day these plastic artefacts will be 'extinct' and we will only see them in old photos and movies, or artworks like this one!
